What's the deal with my plumbing?

I have an old cesspool that needs to be replaced and a new dishwasher to install. The problem is that laundry gray water backs up into the old dishwasher, and my plumber says that the cesspool needs to be fixed before he can take care of the dishwasher. Can anyone explain why?
